Staff Reporter Sam Smith
Our Student Publications class recently went to Bankers Life Fieldhouse to listen to sports reporters, journalists and commentators talk about their careers and show us more ways to further our skills. After attending these media sessions, my classmates stayed for the Pacers game. Before the game started there were performances by cheerleaders and dancers. My All-Star team participated in the Legends Cheer Academy ll performance. When we were “back stage,” we warmed everything up. We watched the Pacemates dance, and they told us a little bit about their jobs and how they travel with the team. Unlike actual cheerleaders they never really tumble or “cheer”. They still meet the requirements of a real cheerleader. The Pacemates all have tumbling skills, and they are all very talented. To me, it seems like it would be an awesome job to shoot for. After we performed the older girls on our team headed backstage to carry the Pacer banner out for the introduction of the starting lineup. Once we were out there, the lights shut off and spotlights came on, the music was loud and fans were cheering. We shook the banner back and forth. It looked like a million waves coming your way, but instead of a bunch of water hitting you, it was air. Huge gusts of air hit you in the face and blow your hair. It was a great experience and an all-around fun day at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
