Spring Break Movie Guide

Staff Reporter Sam Smith
Are you staying home for spring break? Is there nothing to do at home? What can you do on your staycation? I would say to go to the movies! There are so many new fascinating movies out in the theater right now. As far as scary movies go, the new Insidious 3 is coming out. For action movies Insurgent and American Sniper are two amazing movies. The new Cinderella film along with Home are kids and animation types of movies, which would be great if you are going to take little brothers or sisters. For girls in highschool The DUFF and Focus would be great movies to watch. You can see any of these movies at Mooresville's Showtime Cinema or Plainfield's Carmike Theater.

Who Won the Pot of Gold?

Staff Reporter Deana Fishel
Our Monrovia yearbook staff hosted the first annual Shamrock Game on March 17, 2015. Student varsity basketball boy and girl players competed against MHS Staff. With a final score of 52-50, the students won the pot of gold trophy.
The yearbook staff spent weeks preparing for the game. Yearbook member Makayla Rice said, “We had a meeting and Addison Judson came up with the game idea. We started planning back in January. We sat down as a group about once a week to come up with ideas. We all asked each teacher and Mr. Springer if they thought it was a good idea. Everyone thought it sounded good, so we just sent the information out to the teachers and basketball team. We also wanted Dr. Roberson involved so we asked if he would like to coach the teachers and he agreed.”
What about the turnout? “We were very surprised at the turnout, We were expecting people to show up, but not as many as there were. We were really excited and are extremely grateful for everyone’s contribution.” Having sent out a total of about 900 flyers, Mrs. Fisher was happy with the little over 120 who attended. Mrs. Fisher was very thrilled about how the game turned out and cannot wait to make next year’s game bigger and better than this year’s.

Improved Sports Complex - Coach's Point of View

Staff Reporter Sam Smith

Everyone is excited about the new sports complex, especially the athletes and coaches. I recently talked to head football coach Kevin Hutchins. Coach Hutchins said there will be rubber- type flooring in the locker rooms with a bulldog logo in the middle. There will be either smart boards or whiteboards in the locker rooms for the athletes to go over plays. Outside of the new locker rooms, along with our new visitor bleachers and our new scoreboard, we will also be getting new home bleachers. The press box will be about two times bigger than it is now. “Its something that has needed to be done for a long time, and I think it’s coming at the right time for a great group of boys,” Hutchins said. There is a lot to be looking forward to within the next of couple months. I`m sure everyone in Monrovia has been looking forward to this for years.

Scheduling and Course Selections

Dear students:

It is that time of year to begin your course selection process for the 2015-2016 school year.  Please keep in mind your educational and career goals as you select your classes.  The choices you make now will have an impact on the remainder of your high school career and beyond.

Students must now plan to pursue the Indiana Academic Honors Diploma or the Core 40 Diploma.  Requirements for each diploma are outlined in this 2014-2015 Course Curriculum.  The decision that you make regarding the type of diploma you receive will be important to the funding of your post secondary education or training.  21st century scholars must complete a minimum of a Core 40 diploma as well as meeting all other requirements to be considered for their full tuition scholarships.  Students interested in attending Area 31-Ben Davis during their junior and senior years must successfully complete as many courses as possible during their ninth and tenth grade years.

Due to the wide variations in college entrance requirements, students are urged to check with the admission office of their chosen college and visit the college websites when planning their high school programs. College catalogs are available online at most college websites. Most colleges require at least 28 of the credits earned for high school graduation to be devoted to academic courses. Be aware that college entrance requirements can change on a yearly basis.

Achieving your goals requires careful planning on your part throughout your high school career.  This course curriculum guide is designed to help you develop your four year career and revise it as needed.  We encourage you and your parents to read and discuss this booklet and continue to use it as a resource in planning your high school courses.   Indiana Career Clusters Career Academic Sequence Courses

We encourage and invite parents to become a part of their students’ course selection process.  Parent involvement is an integral part of a student’s successful education experience.  Parents are welcome to contact the Guidance office to schedule an appointment or to address and discuss concerns.  We look forward to working with you to make your high school career at Monrovia High School an academically rewarding experience!

Sincerely,

Mike Springer             Gretchen Knock                  Joanie Stader

Monrovia Cheerleaders Extra-Curricular All-Star Team

Staff Reporter Sam Smith
Our Student Publications class recently went to Bankers Life Fieldhouse to listen to sports reporters, journalists and commentators talk about their careers and show us more ways to further our skills. After attending these media sessions, my classmates stayed for the Pacers game. Before the game started there were performances by cheerleaders and dancers. My All-Star team participated in the Legends Cheer Academy ll performance. When we were “back stage,” we warmed everything up. We watched the Pacemates dance, and they told us a little bit about their jobs and how they travel with the team. Unlike actual cheerleaders they never really tumble or “cheer”. They still meet the requirements of a real cheerleader. The Pacemates all have tumbling skills, and they are all very talented. To me, it seems like it would be an awesome job to shoot for. After we performed the older girls on our team headed backstage to carry the Pacer banner out for the introduction of the starting lineup. Once we were out there, the lights shut off and spotlights came on, the music was loud and fans were cheering. We shook the banner back and forth. It looked like a million waves coming your way, but instead of a bunch of water hitting you, it was air. Huge gusts of air hit you in the face and blow your hair. It was a great experience and an all-around fun day at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
