Staff Interview: Mr. Cassida

Which Star Wars is Your Favorite?         Staff Reporter Courtney Palmer

"Tough call, I'm gonna go with... Return of the Jedi," Mr. Cassida replied to the question of Which Star Wars is your favorite? "Why is that episode so much better than all the others?" I inquired.
"The change in scenery, when they're on the desert planet goes from one motif to another on a lush green planet, plus you can never go wrong with lots of Boba Fett," he stated.
¨Why do you think it's better than Force Awakens or Rogue One?"
"The new ones are enjoyable, just the ones from the 70's and the 80's remind me of a younger me; there was nothing like that out before."

Top Ten Trip Review

IMG_0984.JPGStaff Reporter Becca Matias
The Top Ten (actually twelve) spent three days in Cincinnati, Ohio. We went to the Newport aquarium to pet penguins, and escaped from both the Sherlock Holmes and Prison Break escape rooms. The next day we spent the morning at the Cincinnati Zoo before spending the rest of the afternoon at Great Wolf Lodge. On our final day we spent at Kings Island before leaving out of sheer exhaustion. I would give this trip a 9/10 because nothing is perfect, but it was pretty great. I would definitely recommend to any underclassman who is not currently in the top ten to get in there because the Top Ten trip is guaranteed to be amazing.

Monrovia Track Senior Night 2017

Staff Reporter Courtney Palmer
The senior night for boys and girls track 2017 was a success. After 4 years of blood, sweat, and tears, the girls team congratulated and said goodbye to 8 seniors. Coach Cassida was pleased but not satisfied with the season. After overcoming what was said to be a building block year for the team, the girls team ended their regular season with a winning record of 9-3. The boys finished undefeated, having a tremendous year. Having been a part of the girls team, I can certainly say it has been a wild and painful ride, both physically and emotionally. If there is one thing I can say for a review about girls track & field, it's that although the sport is challenging, it is by far the most rewarding. I will definitely miss the sport as well as the team, and I wish them the best in all their future endeavors.

Zydeco’s Review

Staff Reporter Alex Batchelor

Zydeco’s is located in Mooresville at 11 E Main St. It has been proclaimed to be the Cajun embassy of Indiana by Chef Carter Hutchinson. Zydeco’s gives Hoosiers a great taste of Cajun like you’d get in New Orleans. The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Saturday. They don’t take reservations or make deliveries, so it is first come, first served. Their most famous dish is jambalaya. My favorite dish there is the blackened catfish. You can order it with crawfish tails also. Meals range around $11-30.

Staff Interview: Mr. Swafford

Staff Reporter Zach Cottrell
Zach Cottrell: Tell us about next year’s basketball team.
Mr. Swafford: We lost 7 great seniors, so we are going to depend on Chase McCloud, Max Newman, and Jaylen Sprague for their experience.  Plus we have some very capable players that will move up from the JV team.  This summer will be important for our team to work together and get used to having different roles and expectations.
Zach Cottrell: What are your expectations for next year?
Mr. Swafford: We are wanting to make big strides from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, with a sectional championship as our ultimate goal.
Zach Cottrell: What’s your plan for next year after losing 7 seniors?
Mr. Swafford: It’s definitely going to be tough to replace our seniors; they were a special group.  Hopefully, our younger players follow their lead and continue to buy in for the program and work hard to reach our team goals.

Zach Cottrell: What do you think the most important thing is to build off of last year’s success?
Mr. Swafford: We have to be consistent in every way possible, and we have to work very hard in the off season, understanding that nothing will be given and any success will have to earned!

Grilled Strawberry Shortcake with Lemon Cream

Staff Reporter Amber Schalk

Ingredients

Lemon Cream:
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1/2 lemon
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
Shortcake and Glaze:
  • 16 large strawberries, from a 1-pound package, hulled
  • 3/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 store-bought pound cake, sliced into 1/2-inch slices
Directions

Preheat a grill to medium-high heat

For the lemon cream: Beat the cream, sugar, vanilla and lemon zest in a mixing bowl until soft peaks form. Add the sour cream and then hand whisk until slightly more thickened. Place in a 1-gallon resealable bag, chill and set aside. This can be made ahead of time and kept well chilled until ready to use.

For the shortcake and glaze: Slide 4 strawberries onto each skewer. Mix together the sugar and lemon juice in a small bowl.

Grill the cake slices using tongs until grill marks appear, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Follow by grilling the strawberries, flipping once, until grill marks appear, about 3 minutes. Transfer the strawberries to a cutting board and slice in half. Coat the strawberries in the glaze or brush on.

Build the sandwiches by putting lemon cream on one side of the cake, followed by 4 strawberry halves. Add another layer of lemon cream and top with the remaining cake slice.

Varsity Baseball Senior Night

Staff Reporter Luke Smith
It was senior night last night for Monrovia Baseball game. That is always a good time to get you excited for a game, even better when they end with a win. The varsity Bulldogs defeated the Cascade Cadets 4-3. Aaron Cravens had the only home run of the night to help beat the Cadets. Kluemper and Wagner each hit the fence for doubles. The game came down to the very last inning as both teams went scoreless until the 7th. The Bulldog victory is partly thanks to Dawsyn on the clutch closeout.

Mugg-N-Pye

Staff Reporter Luke Smith
I was lucky enough to have the manager, Billy Romer, talk me into stopping by for a bite of pizza. I was not sure at first if I would like the pizza, but I figured I would give it a try. The pepperoni pizza I ordered took less than fifteen minutes, and I was ready to eat the perfectly melted cheese on the pizza. The crust was just crispy enough to be tasty but not enough to break your teeth. The pizza was just what my taste buds were looking for. I will be back again.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 Review

Staff Reporter Kaeley Cunningham
Based off of the original movie Guardians of the Galaxy, leading through the first adventure of the crew as they fight off Ronan and all of his bad ideas.Vol.2 leads you through the next great adventure starring Peter Quill, baby Groot, Rocket, Drax, and Gamora. This new  movie is what you call pulling a wild card, filling you with laughter, a little bit of confusion, and even shock! The “family” must fight to keep themselves together by taking on the galaxy one mixtape at a time unraveling the mystery of Ego and even Peter Quill’s secret life. The movie hits you in the face with lots of shock in the end, but it all comes together. It’s a good movie and worth watching, but this movie isn’t for everyone. I would rate this this movie possibly 8/10.
