The 2015 Soccer Season was
a groundbreaking year. Having only ten players eligible for a game of 11 on
11 calls for some recognition. The soccer team lost their goalie, Courtney
Palmer, to a ACL tear in the first 5 minutes of the first game of the season.
Luckily, the team had Kyrsa Galyan step up for the job. Monrovia's
"Tireless Ten" went stomping into the season unexpectedly beating rivals. Coach
Alison Batka says: “The girls from the team of 2015 were
hard-workers, selfless, and brought the team to a whole different level.
Thinking of what the Tireless Ten accomplished last year makes me very proud as
a coach. Going into the 2016 season knowing that we have a solid team of girls
makes me excited to see what the future holds for us!" These 10 players were truly a
tireless team, playing full 40 minute halves, never being subbed out. Let me
tell you about a few of these Tireless Ten. Junior, Mazie Manley, whom on the
field is known as "corn, maize, firecracker, etc." anything that
relates to corn or being fast. Fast is an understatement for this girl. She
leaves it all out on the field and beats everyone to the ball; has hard,
accurate passes, and has probably been red carded for hitting people so hard. Then there is senior, Leighann York, who many know as "Mel". This girl is a player
of all positions, always has a positive attitude and is the most helpful teammate
on the field. Her vivacious personality calls for lots of laughs on the field,
but also has a "get the job done" persona, definitely an all around
player. Every season, Leighann also manages to hit a ref in the head with a ball. Senior Tori Allen loves Ninja Turtles. Personally, I'm scared to
defend Tori because once she has her mind set, she will go through anyone to
get her team the ball or score a shot of her own. Never gives up, would be a
phrase I think describes Tori. She definitely has the heart to play soccer. For
the 2016 season, the team has gotten additional players, and now have a team of
about 19 players, consisting of 13 seniors. Practicing all throughout the
summer, these girls have not only improved and built on the substantial team
that they already are, but have become unstoppable with bringing the ball down
the field. The teams games start next week. Monday @ Beech Grove, Tuesday @Owen
Valley, and Thursday @TriWest. Come out to see how tireless this team truly is.
