The French gymnast Samir Ait had a horrific experience during the qualifications for vault in the Rio Olympics 2016. After flinging himself off the vault table, he landed incorrectly on his feet and his tibia broke beneath him. Once Ait was on the gurney, he raised his arm to his fans to acknowledge them before being rushed to the hospital. 
This is not the first injury to the leg for Ait. Samir Ait fractured his leg in three places during the European Championship in 2012.
