Open House Planning

Staff Reporter Deana Fishel

Its that time of the year again, everyone: graduation. Get ready to either receive or send out open house invitations if you know of anyone who will be graduating in the next month. Speaking of open houses, The Bulldog Fetch wants to help you out if you get stuck on trying to have the perfect open house. We want to help you with invitations, food, and the supplies that will make the open house you are planning a great one.
RSVP invitations are a great way to figure out exactly how many guests will be able to make it. You can also make personalized open house invitations so they will be unforgettable to the people to whom they are sent. If guests say they will attend, you can determine how much food you will want to serve.
The easiest way to serve your guests during an open house is with a buffet. For quantities, make an assumption that each person will eat about 3-4 servings of each type of appetizer, 5-6 ounces of meat, a handful of vegetables, and one full portion of dessert. This should help with estimating the supplies you will need as well.
An open house generally encourages a lot of mingling and conversation among guests. Make sure you have plenty of supplies, especially plates and cups. It's easy for a guest to put down their drink and forget about it.

Ten Things You Probably Didn’t Know You Can Recycle

The Fetch staff is celebrating Earth Month by finding ways to place less stress on our planet. Look for posts all May on ways you can celebrate with us. Start by considering ten things you probably didn't know you can recycle. If you have any ideas you would like to share, e-mail us at thebulldogfetch@g-mail.com.

It's Cookout Time!

Staff Reporter Deana Fishel
The Bulldog Fetch loves when the warm weather starts approaching. Warm weather means great days to have cookouts! What goes great with cookouts? Barbecue ribs would be that answer. All you need is some baby back ribs, an oven, and a grill.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place ribs in two 10x15 inch roasting pans. Pour water and red wine vinegar into a bowl, and stir. Pour diluted vinegar over ribs and cover with foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Baste the ribs with their juices halfway through cooking.
  2. In a medium saucepan, mix together ketchup, water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, butter, brown sugar, hot pepper sauce, and salt; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer barbecue sauce for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat grill for medium heat.
  4. Lightly oil preheated grill. Transfer ribs from the oven to the grill, discarding cooking liquid. Grill over medium heat for 15 minutes, turning ribs once. Baste ribs generously with barbecue sauce, and grill 8 minutes. Turn ribs, baste again with barbecue sauce, and grill 8 minutes.

Happy Earth Day!

The City of Big Shoulders

Staff Reporter Rowan Gast-Bray
High school seniors with grade point averages that place them in the top ten percent of their class are known as the Top Ten. Monrovia’s Top Ten students are rewarded with several things throughout the school year, the most exciting of which is a 3-day adventure in Chicago led by cool-cats Mr. McDaniel and Mrs. Anderson. The group rented a luxurious house with an unparalleled location, only a couple blocks from Lake Michigan and the John Hancock Tower. The exciting itinerary this year entailed boat rides, fine dining and a Cubs game. The group grew closer together as they bonded during late nights of talking and eating deep dish pizza. The city itself never disappoints. It has a type of character that is exciting to witness. The city of big shoulders has an infectious attitude and nearly every student who went to Wrigley became a Cubs fan. The camaraderie and adventure was unlike anything I have ever experienced. On behalf of the Top Ten, I thank everyone involved in making this exciting trip happen. We also recommend that underclassmen work hard to get a chance at this trip. They will not regret it.

Final Prom Preparations

Staff Reporter Sam Smith
Prom is one week away. Still don`t know where to get your hair done, what to do to your hair or where to get your nails done? If you have an open back dress and you want to show off your beautiful hair, do a half up, half down style. You could braid your bangs, do a french twist or even just bump your hair up. Have a dress that covers your whole back and you want to do an up-do? Do a braid leading to a bun. Feel free to wear long and big earrings, that way you can show those off with your hair up. Now for nails. If you don`t know where to get your nails done, I would recommend going to BNT Nails in Mooresville and have the ladies do your nails. They are wonderful and so sweet. You are now ready to hit the dance floor at prom. Check out the article below to help you freshen up your dance moves.

Dance the Night Away

Staff Reporter Deana Fishel
Learn to do the body wave, body pop, sidewalk, moonwalk and more just in time for prom. The Bulldog Fetch wants to help you out just in case you think you need to brush up on some moves. Learn dances to look just like Beyonce, Usher, Justin Bieber, and Justin Timberlake. Also learn full dances like the Cha Cha Slide, the Macarena, and the Cotton Eye Joe. All eyes will be on you as you take over the dance floor at prom.

Riley Dance Marathon

Contributing Reporter Cheyenne Speck

On Saturday, April 18 from 6-9 p.m. in the Middle School gym, Monrovia's National Honor Society will be hosting a Riley Dance Marathon. A Riley Dance Marathon is not all about dancing. There will be games such as Minute to Win It, dodge ball and basketball. You will also be able to write letters to Riley kids. Riley families will be there to tell everyone their stories. Riley Dance marathons are all about standing and participating in activities for the Riley Kids that aren't able to do so. The cost is $5, and all proceeds go directly to Riley Children's Hospital for improved care and to help save children's lives.

Hoosier Boys & Girls State

Staff Reporter Sam Smith
Recently at Monrovia High School, four students in the junior class were picked to go to Hoosier Girls and Boys State. The boys are Nick Stevens and Zach Stevens. The girls are Cheyenne Speck and Raquel Herrera-Garza. Hoosier State is a summer institution for young men and women from across Indiana to learn about their duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. It is a week where students learn the political system of Indiana. Our students will be attending HGS and HBS from June 21st to June 27th at Trine University. We are eager to hear from our students and staff this June about the experiences and memories made at Hoosier State this year. To stay in touch with more reports from Hoosier State, be sure to check in here at The Bulldog Fetch.

Japanese Steakhouse

Staff Reporter Rowan Gast-Bray

Have you recently had a fancy for Asian cuisine? Well, there is now some variety in Mooresville. The A1 Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi is an impressive establishment. They have an aesthetic interior with the cooks clearly visible as they work hard to make your meal. However, the cooks do not try to put on a show like at Benihana's but, it made me understand how fast you have to be to be able to work in the restaurant business. Their menu boasts many exotic ingredients like eel or snow crab. The menu is extensive as it really doubles as a steakhouse and a sushi place. I ordered a sushi roll stuffed with lobster and avocado; it was garnished with mango. The sweetness from the mango is a pleasant contrast to the salt from the rest of the dish. Overall, it was a good experience. MHS senior Chase Meek, a server there for five weeks, has the inside scoop. He recommends the dragon roll which is shrimp tempura and cucumber with avocado and eel sauce draped on top. Apparently, the fish and everything else is quite fresh. There are four shipments a week. See you at the sushi counter.

Flower Power

Staff Reporter Deana Fishel
Prom is coming up and The Bulldog Fetch wants to help you find your corsages and boutonnieres. Boys, your date is expecting a corsage of flowers that match her dress. Girls, boys have no idea what a boutonniere is, but they need one. There are florists in Anderson, Plainfield, and Mooresville - even a place that delivers to wherever you are in central Indiana. All these places have many different variations of flowers to choose from.
