Bye Bye Birdie: A Preview

Contributing Writer Zachary T. Boles
Bye Bye Birdie is a musical with a book accompaniment by Michael Stewart. Originally titled Let’s Go Steady, a reference to the relationship of main characters Hugo Peabody and Kim MacAfee. Hugo and Kim will be played by Reece Hunter and Rebekah Courtney in this comedy set in a small Ohio town in 1958. The story was inspired by Elvis Presley being drafted into the army. Conrad Birdie, a parody of Presley, will be played by Zach Boles.
The musical mainly follows Albert Peterson and his longtime girlfriend Rose “Rosie” Alvarez; the duo will be played by Austin Thomason and Jacki Knight. Peterson is Birdie’s manager, and Rosie is his secretary who comes up with the idea for Birdie to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. Sullivan will be one of multiple characters that will be played by Rowan Gast-Bray. He randomly selects one fifteen year-old girl, Kim MacAfee, to be kissed by Conrad Birdie before he leaves. Meanwhile, Kim gabs on the phone about how she is Hugo’s girlfriend.
As they story progresses, the audience will begin to feel more connected to the characters. No more spoiler information, however, will be revealed about the story in this article. Choreographer and actress Abby Willis had this to say, “We’ve got a fantastic cast this year. I’m looking forward to working with everyone.” I also had a chance to speak with the show’s director, Adam McDaniel, who called the musical “a cross between Hairspray and Grease.” He also told me that he was excited since this musical highlights teenagers as opposed to the other musicals the drama department has done.
Everyone involved would love for the readers to come out, enjoy their time, and support the Monrovia High School Drama Department.
