Girls Golf

Staff Reporter Allysen Brown

The Varsity Girls Golf team opened their season Monday, August 3rd. The girls opened their season strongly with a win over Greencastle. This is the first win over Greencastle in a few years, so the team was very happy. The final scores were Monrovia 213 and Greencastle 218. The final score is determined by taking the four best individual scores from each team and adding them together. The four best for Monrovia were Allysen Brown with 51 and Baylee Russell, Makayla Swafford and Maddie Wright who all shot 54. They were then followed by Daisy Bennett (59), Grace Faulkenburg (57), Marissa Knieper (60), and Kristen Moscon (67). Coach Swafford was very happy with all of his girls first meet scores. There is always room for improvement. WIth four seniors (Daisy Bennett, Allysen Brown, Baylee Russell, Maddie Wright) Coach Swafford is very happy that he had so many underclassmen come out for golf this year. The program will continue to grow even after the loss of so many seniors this year.

When the seniors were interviewed, there was one common theme. They all said that they could do better. Allysen Brown was happy with a 51 for the first meet of the season. “There are many parts of my game that I need to polish and many places where I can cut strokes off my game. I am very proud of my teammates and I know that we will improve and be a strong team.” Maddie Wright said, “It was a good way to start the season, and I am proud of my team. Yes, everyone can improve, but it was a strong start.” Baylee Russell and Daisy Bennett both said  there is room for improvement in their games.

The match was eventful and almost catastrophic. A player from Greencastle was hit in the back of the neck with a stray range ball. She was hit teeing off on her last hole of the match. This is the same player that Daisy Bennett accidently hit with a ball her sophomore year season. The player was okay, just a little dazed. She finished the match and had a decent score on the hole even after being hit. The girls golf season opener was eventful and a strong start for the team. There will be improvement made as the season continues. The girls had a meet Monday, August 10. The next meets will be Monday, August 17 at home, Tuesday, August 18 away, and Wednesday, August 19 at home.
