All Hallows' Eve

Staff Reporter Kyra Plance
The Celts were a native group that lived 2,000 years ago in the current lands of Ireland, France, and the United Kingdom. On October 31st they celebrated Samhain, a festival to show it was the end of the year. The Samhain, which was named after Lord of Death and Darkness, was overlooked by Druids, or priests. Celtics thought it was the end of the year because at the time, winter was symbolic of human death. They burned some of their crops and animals as sacrifices that night. When at the festival, the Celts would dress up in animal skins to protect themselves from unwanted spirits! This was how Halloween got its start; it has had a lot of shaping and been given new traditions, but you see the original ideas shining through, even two
thousand years later!
