Black Bears Coming Back to Indiana?

Staff Reporter Leighann York
A recent sighting of a black bear traveling through Indiana has been the second one since the 1870’s. It is said that Indiana could be coming across more black bears in the near time future. Bordering states like Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio have black bears that may come over and adapt to Indiana.
The first sighting of a black bear in Indiana was 150 years ago until the first sighting of last year. A young male bear would travel from Michigan to Indiana feeding off of people’s garbage. The bear currently that has been traveling Indiana is most likely to travel to  Michigan to find a mate. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is saying to put up bird feeders and put lids on garbage cans to keep the bear away from human beings.
