Fair Food Favorites

Staff Reporter Becca Matias
This week I surveyed about 50 Monrovia students and teachers about what they like to eat at the fair. Answers varied from savory ribeye sandwiches to sweet caramel corn and all places in between, but five foods in particular racked up the majority of the votes. Here are Monrovia’s Top Five Favorite Fair Foods!

5. Corndog - unsurprisingly this state fair classic made the list.

4. Lemon Shake-up - Another classic, lemon shake-ups are delicious and easy to make at home.

Homemade Lemon Shake-up
2 Lemons
½ cup sugar
½ cup cold water
1 cup crushed ice

  1. Pour sugar into a 16 ounce cup
  2. Cut lemons in half and squeeze juice into cup
  3. Add water and ice
  4. Cover cup and Shake!

3. Deep Fried Oreos - Deep fried Oreos are synonymous with indulgent fair foods and very popular at Monrovia with 8 votes.
2. Funnel Cake - Another confectionary fair classic, this treat pulled away from the competition with 14 votes.

  1. Finally the number one fair food at Monrovia High School is…… Elephant Ears
You don’t have to wait for the fair to come around to enjoy this treat. Try making your own at home with this recipe.

1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1-2 cup oil
2-8 ounce cans of refrigerated homestyle biscuits
Melted butter

  1. Mix sugar and cinnamon together and set aside
  2. Heat oil in large skillet (if a drop of water sizzles in oil it is ready)
  3. Flatten biscuits as much as possible without tearing
  4. Place flattened biscuits one at a time into oil and turn when bottom is slightly brown
  5. When the top and bottom are the same color remove from oil and place on paper towel to absorb excess oil
  6. Brush both sides with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar
